Spiders can get pregnant

August 18, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Recently I hit a spider with a shoe and multitudes of little spiderlings scrambled across the floor. Multitudes. If I had to guess liberally I would say thousands. What ever happened to Charlotte’s Web?! I thought baby spiders were put in little sacks in corners of pig crates! not carried in the womb. I should have listened to all those forwarded emails about Disney being evil and deceitful. Just so everyone knows, if you see a large lazy spider, lying about in the middle of the floor, appearing more dead than alive, try putting it in a Ziplock bag before commencing arachnid annihilation.

*correction: The Original Charlotte’s Web was not a Disney film.

Jonathan Vance

June 23, 2009 · 1 Comment

As many of you know (probably all of three of you who read my blog) I am taking a class called investigating online crimes. Super interesting class, lots of guest speakers, and current issues. Yesterday was an interesting day because the FBI came to speak about a guy named Johnathan Vance who had been arrested for taking girls facebook accounts and trying to illicit nude pictures from them. The reason I am blogging about this is two fold. First, I hope to make some interesting observations about sin on both his part and the girls and provide warnings to young girls so that they don’t fall for any dufuses like him. And second because this guy was not so far away from any of the rest of us. At this point I am not sure how graphic my descriptions below will be, but I will try to keep it PG.

Basicly this guy had a great tactic. Easy entry. All he did was find a high school students AOL instant messenger account and a few things out about her (first and last name, maybe high school and area of town). He would then say hi, and have fun letting her try and guess who he was (as if he knew her really well). Then he would tell her that he was a secret admirer and tell her that if she would answer ten questions, he would reveal his identity and the show would be over. He would warn her that he could ask anything he wanted. He would then ask her flirty personal questions that would be embarrassing if they got out but convince her through natural language and by calling by her nickname or last name and she would keep guessing who he was and answering questions. (Totally appealing to a high school girl). At about question 8 he would ask for their facebook password. Of course reassuring them he wouldn’t do anything and if they answered he would tell them who he was, at this point he would threaten to tell people she knew her embarrasing facts. If they revealed the password, he used that account to get her friends accounts and passwords. He would then ask them for a naked picture of them, of course the would say “no”. So he would threaten to post all their personal info on their facebook (and most of the information she had given him would ruin her reputation – which matters even more to a 15 year old.)  Out fear several girls gave in.

Now, I would like to add that these girls were not “crazy party scene” girls. He targeted girls in churches who had good reputations in there neighborhoods. And a lot of them were here in Birmingham. People you probably know.

After he got the picture, he had total control over the girls. He would threaten to post it on there facebook if they did do what he wanted which we won’t get into but it involved a web cam. Many of the girls would cry and plead with him to let them go but they were stuck. He had so much leverage on their reputations that he could completely control them and make them do terrible unspeakable things… and all of this is done via instant messenger. He earned his sentence. 18 years + life on parole.

You can begin to imagine what this guy might be like… an old creep… disturbed childhood… (I pictured a slightly over weight middle aged man with rings under his eyes and dark curly hair… don’t ask me why.) Turns out this guy just graduated from college, and landed a great job. He was a virgin waiting for marriage and raised in church. He went to auburn and most people knew him.  He was fit, clean shaven and likable. He found a means of sinning and shortly after, his entire life was ruined and rightly so. His sentence may seem harsh, but remember I omitted a lot of what he did, although all of his crimes were committed through a keyboard.

I found it interesting that his attack is very similar to the attack that Satan uses.  Most of these girls real mistake was telling him something embarrassing and flirty. Each subsequent step was relatively small and was done out of fear, not temptation. Granted, most girls just gave up after they lost their facebook and risked their reputations , while a few tried to save there reputations and gave him the picture.

I think that paragraph is loaded with principles but I won’t draw all the parallels because i figure you probably already have. But I do want to share this thought. His sin was illegal. Most sins should be, but because we do not live in a theocracy, like we will one day, we get away with things. It just reminds me that I’m not so far away from Jonathan Vance.

When the FBI came to his house he agreed to answer some questions. He was shaking the entire time. When they finally asked him if he had ever heard of the screen name “metascape” his head collapsed into his hands. “I want to express my deepest apologies for my actions,” He said in court.

Boldy doing what no people I am familiar with have ever done before.

May 31, 2009 · 1 Comment

Ok, so the other day Morgan asked me if I had a need to explore. I said yes, but it was quenched because everything was discovered. I mean I am not going find a new animal or island. I might find some new species of butterfly that is only “new” by a technicality like “They can no longer interbreed with normal butterfly’s”, but WHO CARES ABOUT BUTTERFLYS?

I recently saw the new Star Trek film and the catch phrase caught my attention for the first time: “Boldly going where no man has gone before.” Now that I could go for! Leaping into hyper space and literally ANYTHING could be on the other side. However, this is science fiction. Until we began conquering space I will have to find another way to satisfy my desire to explore. In my post about life goals I told you that making a “bucket list” was on my bucket list. Well, I can check that one off now because I have a bucket list and while making it I realised something. I was exploring. I think the exploring that I can still do is “experience exploring” (which is not code for doing drugs). There are lots of experiences that I don’t know anyone who has done and I hope that I get to do them first. Take my brother Phil for example: he wants to ride on the back of an ostrich, and he’s the only guy I know who has a vineyard in his back yard. He is the poster child for experience exploration. Anyway, feel free to post any of your bucket list items in the comments. Oh, and I’m not quite ready to share mine with everyone because there are a couple of them I want to do first so that no one in my family beats me to it. AND don’t beat phil to riding on an ostrich, I mean he thought of it, and that just wouldn’t be cool.

In between semesters

May 28, 2009 · 1 Comment

Well, I am about to start the summer semester at UAB and I thought I would share what I’ve been learning. For those that don’t know I started working part-time at UAB writing programs for a the computer forensics department which is rapidly growing. I just finished my first program which has been a big confidence booster for me. I presented it today and my boss showed me exactly how it will be used from now on to help investigations. Really good feeling. It’s funny when interviewing for a job for which you do not feel qualified (that was wordy). You want SO BAD to just say “HIRE ME, I’M AWESOME!”, but at the exact same time you want to say “I’ve never done this before and I might suck at first.” At least thats how I felt four weeks ago, but today helped me feel more competent. Well thats all about that for now, so signing off now. Tim Margheim if you read this, I miss you. Andrew, congrats on the boy.  Phil, we need to coordinate trips this holiday season. Malia, I definately want to see pictures. Josh, Becca, and Victoria, I can’t wait to see you.

Life Goals

December 16, 2008 · 1 Comment

This week I got to check something off my list of life goals. Some people might be wondering if I actually have a physical list of life goals and if so what’s on it… Well to answer that question: no, I don’t have a physical list of life goals, but making one is on my list so hopefully I will have that soon enough.
I, however, like to think we all have a list of life goals. Many of the items on the list might seem too petty or too large to ever write on a tangible list, so we keep it in our minds on the “wouldn’t it be awesome if” list. This goal was definately on that list in my mind, but no longer! it has been crossed off. What you are about to see is real. Now, after he is dead and gone, no one will ever be able to say of Daniel Mondy, “Man, and he never got that afro either.”

Some pictures

Ok so here is a short photo summary of our trip to raliegh. But first let me narrate you through it. It all began with a long car ride where I noticed dinosaurs must be approaching by the rings in my dr. Pepper. We were right and Morgan almost got eaten a few times. I cant remember dino-names so i will be referring to them as they are called in the land before time. I don’t think she noticed noticed but Morgan almost backed into a Longneck. Which only moments before had appearantly killed sharptooth. Then I snuck into epic games ( a gaming studio I would like to work for. ) We also got to see the Dead sea scrolls but sorry no photography allowed. And we took a trolly around raleigh (which rhymes) and went but all we found were these green bags.

Fondue!

September 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

So there is always this debate between going out to fun affordable restaurants or shelling out a little more cash for the “romantic” atmosphere and getting to dress up. The problem for me is that i usually have just as much or more fun on a cheap date as i do on one that costs a lot, and ritzy places can sometimes feel stuffy. Well tonight I finally went for the big one and it was so worth it.

We went to a little place called the melting pot which serves a four course fondue meal. We had a really friendly waitress and the food was amazing! When the main course comes you cook eachpeice as you eat it so it’s kind of like a camp fire setting. The best part is that it takes about two and a half hours to finish! You really commit to a whole evening when you go. Plan on shelling out about 80 bucks for two plus tip so ours was a round 100. It’s pricey but for a speial occasion at least you get your moneys worth.

P.S. If you get wine your budget must increase accordingly.

Im not a smart man

September 4, 2008 · Leave a Comment

This is about this guy who sits next to me in my adv.java class. For a while now I have been feeling really good about myself. I’ve been getting good grades, and people really think your smart or ambitious when you say your going for computer science (well or nerdy but I was leaving that out on purpose). Today I had a reality check.

I’ve been telling Morgan for a while that the guy who sits next to me is really good at programming and he works for the department of defense. So today I was talking to him and I found out that even though he is in my upper level course he is a freshman and this is his first semester… Not only that but he clepped out of 44 cr. Hours including cal1&2 chem1&2 and all comp sci classes I have already taken. He got34 on the act and he is about six years younger than me. The worst part is that he is a cool guy. I can’t write him off as a guy with no friends who reads encyclopedias for fun. Ahh! People like him expose my incompetence!
